The phonic knowledge and skills taught in Steps 1 to 5 are usually sufficient for learning to read. When the children know the letter sounds in Steps 1 to 5 and are confident readers who can fluently blend new words that have not been read before, they rarely have problems with reading more complicated words with unusual alternative spellings, especially if the words are in their vocabulary.
In Step 6, the concentration is mainly on spelling. It works well, usually once a week, to introduce a new alternative spelling with a set of words that have that spelling in them [demonstration], such as ‹wh› with the /w/ sound, as in wheel, whale, whisper, white, whip, wheat, whistle, while, whine and whatever. It is worth remembering that in some accents the /h/ in ‹wh› is actually pronounced [demonstration]. For these children the spelling is not a problem as they can hear the difference in ‹w› words and ‹wh› words.
The children then learn to associate the spelling pattern with the group of words that use it. Many examples of alternative spellings and sets of words that use these spellings are available to download, either by scrolling down to the bottom of the screen in Step 6 or going to the Resources section on the home page. I hope you find them useful. The last set of tricky words is also provided, which can be taught in a similar way to the previous steps.
And that concludes Step 6.

As there are not so many words that use the next alternative spellings it is easier for the children to learn them in groups of words. There are ten words provided for each alternative spelling.
