Frequently Asked Questions

Can all this phonics teaching stop children developing a love of reading?

A love of reading can only develop when a child is able to easily read the words on the page. A few fortunate children are able to crack the alphabetic code by themselves and read fluently. Most children need to be taught how to do it, using synthetic-phonics teaching. In my experience the children love being able to work out the words for themselves. It is empowering and enables them to go on and develop that love of reading. Gordon Askew explains this more eloquently in his blog ‘Phonics AND the love of reading’.
